Photographer Elza Jo Tratlehner: 'I do things first and think after.'

Elza Jo Tratlehner is known far beyond the borders of the Netherlands for her fun and eclectic photography. In 2018, she dove into the world of documentary with her first ever documentary film ‘Jolene’. Elza Jo knows exactly how to tell a story in a unique, raw way – which makes her perfect as Jury President of our Craft: Photography-category.

Which project are you most proud of? Why?
This is a Sophie’s choice, but I think I’d go for JOLENE, this is the first documentary I made. I overcame a lot of fears and difficulties on this one. I fell in love with a new discipline.

How do you deal with (the fear of) failure? Any tips?
I tend to do things first and think after. Not always the best order of doing things, but it helps against fear.

What's the most interesting trend in your professional field for the next decade?
I sense a more baroque and outgoing feel in light and decor lately. And I’ve always been very fond of that.

Can you recommend one thing that sparked your imagination recently?
Mouslam Rabat.

What's the best piece of (professional) advice you ever received?
Everyone has their own craftsmanship, the one talent you were born with. Try not to go for your comfortable ‘materials’ but pick the ones you struggle with and you have much more interesting outcomes. (I hope I qouted it right). I learned this from Lorenzo de Rita.

What do you think defines the Dutch creative community?
I think we can do lots of great things with little resources. And I think our esthetic standards are quite high.

What are you most looking forward to seeing at the Dutch Creativity Awards?
Some hidden gems that give that spark of inspiration.
